When I started this blog I wanted to show a lot of behind the scenes, real-life stuff. I wanted to show images of homes both styled and un-styled (hence, the blog’s title), homes with signs of actual life. Well it’s harder than you think to get people to agree to having their mess photographed, so for now it’s just my mess you’ll be seeing again.
Above is the fantasy, photographed by a professional for a magazine, and styled by me.
And this is reality:
Most of the elements are the same right? There’s just more ugly stuff. You know, the stuff we all hate but have to have. The unsightly water bottle, the kitchen roll, the laptop. Yes, people live here.

I love this post! Thank you! I am an interior design blog junkie, and sometimes it stresses me out when my home isn't perfectly styled all the time. Glad to know I'm not the only one with a real life messy kitchen.
hee hee yes sometimes one can feel overwhelmed by the perception of others perfection nice to see the reality once in awhile. Thanks for posting!!!
YEAH!!!!!! Makes me feel better to see the reality! Like there is actual LIFE happening!
Haha! When you start looking you see no big difference, except for the lighting and a few more things in picture no 2. Amazing. Reminds me of my own reality vs. fantasy coffee table: http://petronellaspalats.blogspot.com/2011/04/tisdagstema-pa-mitt-soffbord.html 🙂
I have that exact psychedelic tray… Looks good to me
I wish I still had it! It went away on one of my mad purges 🙁
